Here's an idea...
actually go into the tumblrs of a few of the favorites you follow, instead of hanging in the dashboard. It’s a nice change of pace, and a sometimes much more interesting, focused approach.
Obligatory plug: Tumblr Follow Mode, to quote a fan, “lets you catch up on your tumblr news by flipping through users’ full sites, instead of reading posts in the style-deficient dashboard”. Requires Firefox 2 or 3 and the Greasemonkey add-on.
Addendum: As Autumn points out, non-Firefox folk can do pretty much the same thing by using Google Reader’s “Next” bookmarklet (although you will have to manage your tumblelog subscriptions manually).
