jonathaneunice asked: You have to write a new hosted web application. What language and infrastructure do you use? Is it a static answer ("I'd use X, Y, and Z.")? Or are there variables and a variable answer? If the later, what are determining factors / answers?

I’m really an ivory tower/serial tinkerer type when it comes to web programming, so I wouldn’t want to make those decisions in a vacuum.

Thanks to Tumblr/Twitter I have a number of friends that are more informed and experienced in this and I’d seek their counsel.

Whatever the solution, I understand the power of open source, so I’d prefer building on some sort of LAMP stack (or at least LA??).

I’m not too particular about languages because I’ve played around with a lot of them. I’d want at least one person experienced in the language working with me, to help me code idiomatically, and I’d page in or learn it as I go.

If I were told “it’s just you, and we have to know now”, I’d ask for a RedHat server and a copy of the latest edition of Agile Web Development With Rails*.

*That line will earn an automatic heart from one of those experienced friends I mention. You know who you are.
