I’ve actually used MD5 hashes myself to de-duplicate my own files!
There’s still something tripping my bullshit detector on this thing, but I can’t get a good read on it.
Could just be echoes of past products that have said “never mind how we do it” in connection with security and compression, only to turn out they weren’t actually doing anything or were at best misguided about what they could do.
