In the first grade, I made a valentine for my teacher. I drew a picture of a cop, his hand up in the “stop” gesture, whistle in mouth. Beneath the picture I wrote, “POLICE BE MY VALENTINE!” and signed it.
She returned it to me, marked to correct “police” to “please”.
