“How could you possibly think typing ‘import skynet’ was a good idea?”
– Alt Text from the xkcd 2008 Christmas Special. (I know that technically it’s the “title” attribute of the img, so no need to let me know, ‘kay?)

It may bear mentioning here that I fly at least several times a year, and that I am a fairly educated near-adult. It may also bear mentioning that I have not been living under a rock, in a cave, or on Mars—my living situation is almost entirely unaffected by clichéd prepositional phrases—and so I know that every joke about the next step in the air travel process has been made like a two-dollar...

SOLVED: Tumblr Theme Engine Help
Update: Many thanks to Guillermo Esteves for pointing out that the tags have become a little more case sensitive during my hiatus. While I was less active, the theme engine seems to have ceased liking my reblog credit block. Anyone know why this would have stopped working? Dashboard note: view at permalink or here.

This is a handy phrase when you’re learning a language or can’t remember a particular word. Some of these phrases mean “What’s the … for …?”

The Republicans and the Search Engine Optimizers
If Republicans are going to be successful in the next round of elections, they’re going to have to figure out what they stand for and why moderate people should vote for them. A few surface enhancements won’t suffice. Technology might help them spread their message more effectively. But first they need a message worth spreading. They’ve used Rove-ian “the ends justify the...

Welcome to the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer... →
Since the mid-1960’s Neil Sloane has been collecting integer sequences from every possible source. His goal is to have all interesting number sequences in the table. At the present time the table contains over 100000 sequences. 5487 of the best of these sequences were published in 1995 in The Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences, by Neil Sloane and Simon Plouffe. The book is still useful, since...

What Tumblr theme is the most "me"?
I really should move to a theme that incorporates some of the newer features, but I’m totally out of the loop on what’s been developed. Any suggestions?

Woman shares nice story about $100,000 →
“Satan will tempt you, I have been having real bad teeth problems. I thought, ‘I’ll get my teeth fixed.’” — Woman returns $100,000 found at Cracker Barrel Heartwarming if true (USA Today Online even picked it up), but the story says the money consisted of 97 one-thousand dollar bills from the sale of a woman’s house and possessions. Problem is, circulation of one-thousand dollar bills was...

Word Journal →
Everyone loves words. Especially Linguistics students. So when my tutor (Lynne Murphy, by the way, for fellow Linguists) suggested a word journal as an extra credit project, I jumped all over it. This isn’t it, but it’s borne from the same idea, except with more collaboration. (Name is subject to change on the grounds that it’s boring, apparently. Jeez.) At the moment, it’s Inky, Livejamie, and...

Matt Legend Gemmell – What have you tried? →
The problem is that this person’s problem-solving technique is to ask for the solution. Not to seek advice on how to approach the task, or ask for the names of likely classes to look into, or a link to an example - but to just ask for the code, fully formed and ready to go. This is not problem solving, and software engineering is entirely about problem solving. I ran into this a lot in systems...
